About this engagement

The NHS in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland wants to find out the views and opinions of children, young people (11-25 years old), families and staff about their experiences and knowledge of healthcare locally.

Children and young people are experiencing a world very differently to how adults experienced it in their youth. Young people also operate and exist in different spaces and may not respond to traditional engagement methods and timelines.

This is the first large scale engagement of its kind to be undertaken in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. The insights and knowledge gained will be used to improve services and ultimately enhance the health and wellbeing of children and young people.  We also want to ensure that this isn’t research in isolation and the voice of young people is at the centre of healthcare into the future.

This is your chance to shape healthcare for children and young people in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. We want to hear from:

  • People who are 11-25 years old, living in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland
  • Families of people who are 11-25 year olds
  • NHS and healthcare staff providing services to people who are 11-25 years old

This engagement will be the start of a long dialogue and conversation between children, young people and their families and the NHS.

Why we want to understand the needs of children and young people

The information collected from this engagement will:

  • Build a picture of the health and wellbeing of children and young people in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
  • Help us to understand what is important to children, young people and families receiving care and staff delivering care.
  • Identify areas of good care and areas where we need to improve.

Why you should take part

Your answers will provide vital information about the health and wellbeing of children and young people which would inform decisions on how to make healthcare better.

By taking part you will help the NHS make the right decisions about important issues that affect the health and wellbeing of children and young people. The results from the engagement will provide valuable data which will tell us the health stories of children and young people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland and highlight inequalities that young people face.

We want to understanding young people’s views and experiences on physical and mental healthcare, as well as what it feels like to transition into adult services.

Who is carrying out the engagement

NHS Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Integrated Care Board (LLR ICB) is carrying out the engagement in partnership with its Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Alliance.   The ICB plans health services for local people – both children, young people and adults.

How the results will be used

Any information given will be anonymous and treated in confidence and we will handle your data in accordance with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The data will be used for statistical and research purposes only and nothing we publish will identify you or your household.

The information will be shared with decision makers across the NHS and care services and used to make decisions about how services are designed and delivered.

What happens next

After the engagement comes to an end on Sunday 4 March 2024, all the feedback people have provided will be independently analysed and evaluated. A report of findings will then be produced and presented to the Integrated Care Board during a public meeting.

We will also publish the report on this website and communicate further information about the outcome of the engagement including the improvements that will be made.

We need young people from all backgrounds to help us understand the healthcare landscape from their point of view. Once we have gathered all the information from the engagement, we will need young people to help us identify key areas of work needed to improve services to children and young people. Young people can influence new services, advise on new policies, help make healthcare more accessible and steer decisions about services for children and young people.

In addition to participating in the engagement, there are two health related Youth Advisory Boards in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland that young people can join. Find out more details here.
