A total of 5,000 individual patient records each month are now being accessed by the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) Care Record – and this figure is increasing all the time.

Evaluation carried out by the LLR Care Record programme team has found that 7,500 logins to the shared care record are being carried out monthly across the health and care sector.

And with figures showing an average time saving of 30 minutes for adult social care staff by accessing the shared care record and nine minutes for NHS staff, the freed-up time is helping to create more efficient working lives. Indeed, at current levels of use, the LLR Care Record is freeing up an estimated £64,000 worth of staff time per month across the system – equivalent to £768,000 per year.

Sandra Taylor, LLR Care Record benefits and change manager, who oversaw the research, said: “It is very pleasing to see that more and more staff are using the LLR Care Record to access the records of individuals who they are directly providing care for – and are telling us about the benefits of this.

“In early March (2025), we held a staff engagement event in Leicester and the feedback on the day was tremendous in terms of the benefits being realised and the opportunities being suggested to further improve the platform.

“The numbers of staff using the LLR Care Record are going up and up and we hope that through further promotion, and by members of staff telling their colleagues about its ease of use and the benefits they are experiencing, that the rate of usage will rise further.”

The LLR Care Record is joining up people’s health and care records across the NHS and local authorities. It means information recorded about someone’s health and care such as illnesses, medications and hospital admissions can be accessed by different people who are directly involved in their care. Hospitals, GPs and other health and care workers have always tended to have separate records – the LLR Care Record allows the data from these to be seen in one place.

A total of 20,000 staff in LLR health and care providers and East Midlands Ambulance Service have access to the LLR Care Record for direct patient care. It has been rolled out across adult social care in Leicester City Council, Leicestershire County Council and Rutland County Council, and rollout is progressing in Leicestershire Partnership Trust, University Hospitals of Leicester, Patient Care Locally CIC, GP practices (Forest House, Ibstock, Inclusion Healthcare and Assist), LOROS hospice and community pharmacies.
