Minor Ailments

If you are usually in good health, many minor ailments can be looked after yourself at home without needing a medical appointment. You can get quick and easy advice about treating minor ailments from NHS 111 or by downloading the NHS app. Your local pharmacy can also advise you how to treat minor conditions and recommend appropriate medicines that you can buy over the counter. You can read more about NHS 111 and local pharmacy services below.

Your GP Practice

A GP practice is a team of health professionals, led by doctors known as general practitioners (GPs), who oversee all aspects of your physical and mental health care, throughout your life. You should contact them for medical advice and treatment for conditions you can’t treat yourself or aren’t getting better.

A pharmacy is the place to go for advice or over-the-counter medicines for a wide of health problems. Most pharmacies offer face-to-face consultations in private, where they can check your symptoms and recommend the best treatment, or just reassure you. Many of us live near a pharmacy and you don’t need an appointment to see them. They are often open in the evenings and at weekends, so they offer fast, convenient support.

Accident and Emergency

Accident and Emergency is for life-threatening problems only. Please keep the service free for people who need it by using the alternative services listed above instead. If you are not sure which service you need, contact NHS 111 online or by phone before setting out anywhere.

Urgent Dental Care

If you have an urgent dental problem or you are in extreme pain, then please phone your local dental practice for advice and treatment. Please do not attend your practice in person, unless requested to do so by a dentist.

NHS 111

NHS 111 can help if you have an urgent medical problem and you’re not sure what to do. They can help you online or over the phone, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They can advise you how to treat minor problems yourself at home or, if needed, they can connect you to a medical expert, arrange a face-to-face appointment at a local service or tell you how to get any medication you need.
