The Board of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) Integrated Care Board (ICB) today approved the recommendation to cancel the scheme to develop a Day Case Unit in Hinckley.

The decision was taken at the ICB’s Board meeting, held in public and in common with Northamptonshire ICB, and follows concerns about the viability of the scheme. In a report presented to the Board, the ICB demonstrated that, eight years after the scheme was originally approved, the scheme has become unaffordable and is no longer a viable, efficient or sustainable use of resources.

Hinckley has, however, seen substantial investment in local healthcare services during this period, particularly through the development of the new £24.6 million Community Diagnostic Centre, which opened in 2025 and provides modern, accessible diagnostic services for local residents.

Pete Burnett, Chief Strategy Officer at LLR ICB, said: “We fully recognise that the decision to cancel the scheme will be disappointing for the local community. Our focus now is to work closely and transparently with stakeholders to explore alternative and realistic options for the site that meet the needs of the population.”

A copy of the report relating to the scheme can be found on page 15 of the Board papers.
