Broom Leys Surgery
Who we are
Broom Leys Surgery is in the town of Coalville in North West Leicestershire and has over 8000 registered patients.
We are a Sole Practitioner surgery with 13 clinical staff, eight reception staff, three administrators and three house keepers. We are a small practice with great communication and inclusion of all staff at its heart. We are also committed to ‘going green’.
How we have turned green
Waste: New bins in the kitchen. This is a small gesture however a highly visible daily reminder to all staff to recycle where possible. Currently staff are taking the recycling home to dispose of correctly as we have no facility to have our own recycling bins at the moment. This is in the process of being changed.
Batteries and printer cartridges: We recycle batteries and printer cartridges and encourage all staff and patients to do this with us.
Clinical waste: Separate waste as we go – cardboard/paper, plastic and clinical waste. This increases recyclable waste, decreases the amount of clinical waste produced and therefore reduces cost.
Things we do:
Paperless printing: Nearly all prescriptions are sent EPS, patient leaflets are sent via ACCURX. FIT notes are sent electronically.
Carbon footprint: We have completed our carbon footprint which shows us as a practice the areas we need to improve on.
Lighting: We are changing all the lighting in the building to ensure that it’s more energy efficient.
Green Team: We have a dedicated ‘Green Team’ to discuss ideas and to implement changes however big or small.
Social Prescribers
We champion our social prescribers. They offer non-medical community based activities and a holistic approach to patient care. They improve mental health, health inequalities and loneliness therefore reducing GP consultations and medical interventions.
Patient Participation Groups
We are lucky to have a highly involved group of patients who are keen for us to go green. They provide invaluable feedback and support.
Our green plans for the future
Building: We are keen to make our building as energy efficient as possible. As this is leased we are having some difficulties implementing the changes we would like in a timely manner.
More recycling: We would like to create a ‘one stop recycling shop’ for our patients to dispose of inhalers, insulin/diabetic devices and Epi pens. To simplify the process of recycling these devices and encourage patient engagement and participation.
