People aged 75 and over, people who are immunosuppressed and frontline health and care workers can now book an appointment for an autumn booster of the Covid vaccine.
The National Booking Service is open for eligible people to book ahead for a vaccination to take place after Monday 12 September.
The invitation will later be extended to other eligible age groups to have their vaccine at a later date, each group will be invited in priority order. Between now and December the autumn Covid booster will be made available to:
- Frontline health and social care workers
- All adults aged 50 years and over
- People aged 5 to 49 years in a clinical risk group
- People aged 5 to 49 years who are household contacts of people with immunosuppression
- People aged 16 to 49 years who are carers
Those at highest risk will called in first. You should have your booster at least 3 months after your last dose of vaccine.
Dr Caroline Trevithick, Chief Nursing Officer and Deputy Chief Executive of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Integrated Care Board, said: “Covid is more serious in older people and in people with certain underlying health conditions. This winter it is expected that many respiratory infections, including Covid and flu, may be circulating at high levels.
“The protection offered by each dose of the Covid vaccine reduces over time and therefore it is very important that eligible people take up the offer of the next booster dose, in order to receive maximum protection ahead of the winter period.
“If you have missed any of your Covid vaccination doses – the first or second dose (or a third primary dose if you are immunosuppressed) you should have them as soon as possible. If you are eligible for the autumn booster but think you have missed a previous booster you should still go ahead – you will not need another dose.”
People who are eligible for a flu vaccine may be able to have this at the same time as their autumn Covid booster.

I am confused by the term 4th vaccination and the need to have another one this autumn.
I have had in 2021 three vaccinations 21/01 21 10/04/21 and 16/10/21
then a booster 4th vaccination on 16/07/22.
Do I need another booster, the fifth?
I would also advise that I have had Bells Palsy for the last 9 months, still present.
Hi Kenneth – Covid vaccine doses are all explained on the national NHS website here: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination. We are unable to answer specific questions about the vaccine ourselves.
