Voluntary Action LeicesterShire (VAL) provides advice, support and training to charities and community groups across Leicester and Leicestershire.
With around 2,400 registered charities and an estimated 3,800 grassroots community organisations across the city and county, we help charities to reach their potential and continue delivering vital services within local communities.
Working in partnership with FareShare UK, FareShare Midlands is the largest food redistribution charity in the region, feeding over 80,000 people every week. We receive surplus food into our network of warehouses where it is sorted, stored and shared with around 800 charities and community groups. These members turn the food into delicious nutritious meals, affordable shopping and food parcels. As well as food, our members provide other vital services to people living in food poverty. In addition, our Employability programmes offer training, work experience and interviews to people who are struggling to find employment or re-enter the workforce.
Breathing Space is a free, confidential listening service for adults (18+) supported by trained volunteers and counsellors-in-training under the supervision of a fully qualified BACP counsellor.
Citizens Advice LeicesterShire offers a generalist advice service to residents in Blaby, Harborough, Hinckley & Bosworth, Melton and North West Leicestershire. CitAL gives advice on a range of issues, including Welfare benefits, Debt, Housing, Employment, Relationships and family, Immigration, Discrimination, Community Care, Consumer issues.

The Stroke Association is the only UK wide charity solely concerned with supporting people in their life after stroke. It funds research into prevention, treatment and better methods of rehabilitation, and helps stroke patients and their families directly through its Life After Stroke Services. These include Stroke Recovery Service and Communication Support.

We operate entirely outdoors in various wooded sites in north Leicestershire and our mental health support services include:
6-week Wellbeing in the Woods courses, combining mindfulness and self care strategies with crafting and peer support
Forest Therapy (also known as Forest Bathing) walks
Regular drop-in sessions around the campfire for food, connection, chat and a variety of nature based crafts and skills
Regular Social Wellbeing rambles
In 2022 we supported service users with long term conditions such as MS, ME, Fybromyalgia, Mild to Moderate Mental Illness, PTSD, Loneliness, Anxiety and Depression.
SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is a trusted source of practical, emotional, and financial support for serving personnel, veterans and their families in their time of need. In 2021 our trained teams of volunteers and employees helped more than 66,000 people, from Second World War veterans to those who have served in more recent conflicts, or currently serving (both regulars and reserves), and their families.
SSAFA understands that behind every uniform is a person. And we are here for that person and their family, any time they need us and in any way they need us.
We are the accepted parent carer forum for Leicestershire. A parent carer led organisation for families of children and young people with additional or special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) who live or access services in Leicestershire. We work to gather the parent carer voice through surveys, meetings, social media, and projects with strategic partners, share collective lived experiences, concerns, views, and solutions of parent carer members.
To build skills, confidence, and teamwork of parent carers so that together we raise awareness of a wide range of children and family’s needs.
We support the most under-represented young people in society through creative experiences that make lasting personal and social change.
Tackling the Toxic Trio of Period Poverty: Lack of access to products, lack of access to education and stigma.
We deliver disposable products to sections of the community where needed.
We deliver 'Make the Switch' events where we encourage sustainability and provide free re-usable products.
We advocate and campaign for equality and equity for Women and People who Menstruate from all communities.
We raise awareness via pop ups, social media and public talks to tackle stigma, and we offer body literacy and cycle focused health and wellbeing workshops.
