LLR Policy for Vaginal Pessaries

Threshold Criteria

A vaginal pessary is a plastic device that fits into the vagina to help support the uterus, vagina, bladder, or rectum. The pessary is most often used for pelvic organ prolapse

Eligibility

LLR ICB will only fund ring pessary management in the following circumstances

·         Insertion, replacement and removal of vaginal ring pessary should be routinely done in a primary care setting; ring pessary replacement is not commissioned as a secondary care service. This does not include technically difficult pessaries such as shelf pessaries.

·        There is no restriction applied to the first fitting of ring pessaries in secondary care if the patient has been referred for assessment or management of prolapse or a separate reason, however patients should not be referred specifically for the first fitting of ring pessaries.
