Threshold Criteria
A tummy tuck, or ‘abdominoplasty’, is cosmetic surgery to improve the shape of the tummy area (abdomen). It can involve removing fat and excess loose skin and tightening the abdominal muscles.
Apronectomy (modification of the mini-abdominoplasty – mini tummy tuck) is a surgical removal of the large excess of skin and fat which is hanging out over the pubic area which is commonly called an apron.
Eligibility
All criteria must be met: · Sexual maturation has been reached · Has not already had an abdominoplasty/apronectomy · BMI is between 18 and 27 and has been within this range for 2 years · Confirmed non-smoker and documented abstinence prior to procedure · Photographic evidence · Functionally disabling resulting in severe restrictions in the activities of daily living |
This procedure requires PRIOR APPROVAL refer to “The Commissioner – Cosmetic Procedures/ Plastic Surgery CAS” on ERS. And sent to Cosmetic Surgery Request Officer – lcr.ifr@nhs.net · Details of condition · BMI and period maintained · Smoking status · Clinical photos · Clinical evidence of functionally disabling resulting in severe restrictions in activities of daily living such as- o Recurrent intertrigo beneath the skin fold o Experiencing severe difficulties with daily living i.e. Ambulatory restrictions o Where previous post trauma or surgical scarring (Usually midline vertical, or multiple) leads to very poor appearance and results in disabling psychological distress or risk of infection o Problems associated with poorly fitting stoma bags The Cosmetic Surgery Request Officer will acknowledge receipt of the application to the GP and patient as well as the outcome. if approved the information will be forwarded to the Plastic Surgery department and an assessment appointment made. If not approved, the GP should discuss the outcome with the patient and the alternative options. |
Request of Medical Photographs The patient should be given the Request for Medical Photographs form and asked to attend Medical Illustration at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Medical Illustration will notify the Cosmetic Surgery Request Officer as soon as the patient has attended for photographs. |
The approval for an assessment is not a guarantee of surgery. There may be other factors that would decide whether surgery is the appropriate option for a patient. This will be discussed with the patient at the assessment stage by the Plastic Surgeon |
